Dedicated members attached to a multidisciplinary Abalone Task Team successfully executed an intelligence-driven, waylay operation in targeted areas along the Jeffreys Bay coastline.
The operation led to the arrest of five men found in possession of a significant amount of abalone on 10 July.
According to police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy, suspected abalone poachers were spotted carrying bags believed to be filled with abalone.
He said that members tactically approached the group and managed to arrest five suspects in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act, Act No. 18 of 1998.
“Abalone with an estimated street value of R250 000 was seized,” said McCarthy.
He said that the suspects are due to appear before the Humansdorp Magistrates’ Court on 11 July.
