The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Kouga
Municipality are appealing to bathers, paddlers and fishermen to be cautious
along the coastline between St Francis Bay and Plettenberg Bay after a whale
that washed ashore at Oyster Bay Main Beach had to be euthanised on Sunday
afternoon by police.

With the animal appearing to be in poor health and hard
aground in shallow surf, the decision was made by the veterinarian on the scene
to euthanise the animal.

The South African Police Service, under guidance from
the veterinarian, humanely euthanised the whale. Since the whale carcass
currently remains on the beach, there is a strong likelihood of increased shark
activity along this stretch of the coast so caution is advised.

The NSRI said
plans to remove the carcass are being investigated.

Oyster Bay Beach has since been closed to bathers by Kouga
Municipal Authorities.
