Hankey and Patensie residents are advised that the annual “dry period” for the town has been set for Saturday, June 17, to Monday, July 3, this year.

The “dry period” takes place annually when the Gamtoos Irrigation Board closes off the irrigation canals for maintenance.

Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said the towns of Hankey and Patensie received water for domestic use from the Gamtoos irrigation scheme.

“As a result, their annual maintenance period impacts on the availability of domestic water to households and businesses,” he explained.

He said that water restrictions were already in place due to the ongoing drought, but cautioned that adherence to the restrictions would be more important than ever during the dry period.

“We ask that residents and businesses make an extra effort to save water over this period,” Hendricks concluded.
