“The BR & E Programme will see the municipality’s Local Economic Development section conducting interviews and surveys with business owners, entrepreneurs and community organisations,” Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said in his State of the Municipality Address.
“The purpose is to identify issues, concerns and potential opportunities that local government, agencies and other stakehol-ders can address proactively to stimulate growth. “
He said the initial focus would be on the Tourism sector, one of Kouga’s biggest potential economic drivers.
Hendricks said Kouga’s partnership with Prince Edward County, through the Building Inclusive Green Municipalities (BIGM) programme, presented a golden opportunity for the municipality to grow its local economy, support entrepreneurs and boost job creation.
The programme is funded by Global Affairs Canada and facilitated by the South African Local Government Association (Salga) and Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the partners in March last year, committing the two to cooperate on matters of LED.
