A Humansdorp car dealership has come on board to help kit out Kouga’s lifeguards for the Festive Season.
Williams Hunt Humansdorp, home to the Isuzu brand, this week handed over 45 bright red swimming trunks to Kouga Municipality.
Retailer principal Willie Spangenberg said Williams Hunt was proud to be able to contribute to the safety of beachgoers.
“The safety of our residents and visitors is of great importance to us, not only on the road but also on the beach.
“We trust that the trunks will help to ensure that the lifeguards look professional at all times and that they are easily identifiable,” he said.
“It is also our way of saying thank you to them for the important work they do.”
Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor Daniel Benson expressed his gratitude to the Williams Hunt team for their contribution to the municipality’s summer safety programme.
“The beaches are our biggest attraction this time of the year and we want everyone to enjoy a safe and fun holiday. Partnerships such as these will help us to achieve that.”
A total of 50 lifeguards, including senior lifeguards Zweli Mafutha and Paul Makupula, will be keeping an eye on bathers at the official swimming beaches this Festive Season.
Benson said all the lifeguards have a valid Surf Proficiency or Lifeguard Award qualification and are part of a recognised Surf Lifesaving Club, registered under Lifesaving South Africa.
Approximately 18 of the lifeguards are part of NSRI Jeffreys Bay’s new lifeguard unit through which ongoing training takes place.
“All those appointed, were also required to complete a rigorous fitness test, consisting of a 100m beach run, a 250m swim in the sea, another 200m beach run and a 400m swim in the sea,” he said.
