IS it a bird? Is it Aquaman? Is it a shark or even a pirate ship?
No! It is a raft.
And it is all made from ’trash’ for a good cause.
Building a raft from recycled material only, strong enough to withstand the onslaught of “sharks and a variety of floating obstacles,” will put the skills of Jeffreys Bay Technical College engineering learners to the ultimate test at the first Everything Recycled that Floats event – all in a bid to raise funds for the college.
According to college co-owner and administrator, Magda Pietersen, students will be split into 20 teams and will be required to build rafts using recycled material.
“They will then have to paddle their rafts around Wacky Waterpark and stay afloat despite the many obstacles placed along the course,” she says.
Bonus points will be given to the best represented team and raft.
Pietersen says, “The aim of the event is to have fun, with the learners using their acquired skills to overcome a watery obstacle course. It will double-up as a fundraiser.
“Funds raised will be used to buy furniture for the college.”
Residents are welcome to join and cheer for their favourite team.
Braai-packs, including a chop, sausage, sosatie and bread roll, will be on sale. The event organisers will do the braaiing.
Everything Recycled that Floats will take to the water at Wacky Waterpark situated at Marina Martinique at 09:00 on Saturday, January 25.
