A NEW organisation has been formed to unite Eastern Province Cricket and Border Cricket under a single banner, in order to promote cricket development in the province.

According to chairperson, Donovan May, who is also president of Eastern Province Cricket (EP Cricket), the establishment of Eastern Cape Cricket (ECC) will strengthen the game in the province.

“Our objective is to grow cricket in the Eastern Cape down to grassroots level. This includes schools’ cricket and club cricket,” said May.

“There will be a special emphasis on women’s cricket. Greater attention will also be paid to creating opportunities for the disabled to play the game.”

May added that the formation of ECC makes cricket in the Eastern Cape fully compliant with the “geopolitical alignment” of Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

All the provinces are required to have only one representative body.

The Eastern Cape is, however, expected to retain its two seats on the CSA members council.

“Border Cricket and EPC will continue to run their existing regions as the province is too big geographically for a single body, and both are deeply rooted in their regional district cricket structures,” May explained.
