On 14 May, NSRI Jeffreys Bay were called to help catch an unexpected guest—a three-month-old African penguin at Point surf spot.
A statement released by the NSRI said that with swift care, the penguin was safely caught and handed over to Trumi, the local seabird expert.
The penguin will now be transported to SANCCOB in Gqeberha for specialist care and rehabilitation.
“The African penguin is classified as Endangered, with its population in rapid decline due to habitat destruction, overfishing, pollution, and climate change. Every individual counts in the fight to protect this iconic species,” the statement said.
Recent legislation has been enacted to provide stronger protections for African penguins and their environment, including restrictions around marine activities in key breeding and feeding zones.
The statement said that public awareness and responsible behaviour are key parts of conservation efforts.
“If you spot a penguin or seabird in distress, please do not touch or attempt to feed it. Contact local experts or the NSRI to ensure proper care and safety for both the animal and yourself,” the statement said.
“Let’s work together to protect these incredible creatures and the oceans they call home.”
