TO ensure that their players can participate in the upcoming Junior Interprovincial Touch Tournament, the Eastern Province Touch Association (EPTA) will be hosting an exciting Golf Day event on March 4, at Hankey Golf Course.
EPTA is a non-profit company affiliated to the South African Touch Association (SATA) who is the governing body of touch rugby in South Africa.
The association is tasked with sourcing and developing touch rugby players in the Eastern Province and entering these players in the senior, junior and mixed teams in every provincial tournament held by SATA and other regional associations.
Merlin Petersen, Eastern Province Touch Rugby executive committee member, said that in October last year EPTA participated in the Senior Interprovincial Touch Tournament in Gauteng where they walked away as proud gold medal winners in the men’s I-division and men’s u/21 division.
In July this year, EPTA player, Craig Primo will represent the South African Touch Squad at the World Youth Touch Games in England.
Petersen said that EPTA plans to repeat their success in the Junior Interprovincial Touch Tournament which they will be participating in from March 18 to 20.
“The tournament will give the players an opportunity to be selected to join the SA Touch Squad which could see them participate in the World Youth Touchies in England next year,” said Petersen.
He said that EPTA receives no financial assistance from any public or private institution and is therefore dependent on sponsorships and donations.
Petersen said that to participate in the Junior Interprovincial Touch Tournament, each player is expected to pay R2 350 for registration, transportation, accommodation, and food.
“Most of the players are underprivileged children, and it is a challenge for them to accumulate enough funds for the tournament,” said Petersen.
To generate the necessary funds, EPTA plans to host a Golf Day at the Hankey Golf Course on March 4.
The price for the golf game is R250 per person.
On the day there will be more than R10 000 worth of prizes to be won and a waterhole will be made available.
