DEEP . . . rhythmical . . . flowing . . . and vibrant, yet deeply relaxing.
As I step into Lotus Breath Studio in Jeffreys Bay, I am warmly greeted by Alannah Jones – fiery red hair, small in stature and barefoot.
With a quaint bracelet sporting a small sea shell around her ankle. Similar to the bigger shells found in the studio.
Not to forget the crystals.
I am a bit apprehensive as I have never been for a Kahuna Bodywork (massage) before.
In her soft and calming voice, Alannah explains, “Kahuna Bodywork is an ancient form of Hawaiian massage that is vibrant and transformative. Using forearms, hands and elbows in deep, dynamic and flowing strokes, this magical massage taps into your soul – massaging the body from top to toe. It clears your mind, heals your wounds and nourishes your body.
“It is unlike any other form of massage.
“Kahuna honours the body’s inner wisdom and ability to self-heal. Through this gentle, yet powerful, massage comes restoration and balance.”
Then it is time to get undressed.
Yes, completely naked.
Although it is up to the client, it is preferred to ease the fluidly of continuous movement.
What it felt like
With the scent of Jasmine in the air, I lay face down on the bed – a sarong strategically positioned to put me at ease.
Despite my initial feelings of vulnerability, unsure of what the next hour has in store for me – and generally not comfortable with people touching me, especially strange people – it does not take long before my body slowly but surely begins to relax.
The music filling the air is very different from what I am used to . . . drums and chanting of what I can only assume must be Hawaiian prayer. The words are comforting, even though I do not understand them.
Ensuring that I am comfortable, Alannah, called a body worker as opposed to a masseuse, gets going: making fast, flowing movements over me – I can feel the wind move over my skin.
Simultaneously giving of her energy, while receiving energy from me.
Then for the massage.
‘Dancing’ quietly in rhythmic unison with the music, breathing deeply, she massages my feet with long, powerful strokes. Moving from my feet to my legs, arms, back and up the entire length of my body to my neck. And down again. Without once breaking contact with my body.
Concerns about my clothes lying in a heap at the back of the room and cellulite are long forgotten.
The feeling? Nothing short of extraordinary.
The 1-hour session also included massaging of my arms and shoulders and stretching my calves and upper legs.
As I return from my happy place, I see in Alannah’s quiet smile that Kahuna really is an exchange in its purest form, a sharing of energy and an equally rewarding experience for the giver and recipient.
She warns, “You might experience a headache tomorrow, but that is normal, it is all the toxins leaving your body.”
The verdict
I felt feeling relaxed, energised and deep in thought.
The massage moved me deeply, as it reminded me of the power of touch, of the simple sensation of skin-to-skin, of the transformative potential that comes from compassion without agenda.
This style of massage is unlike anything else I have ever experienced before.
Yes, I was naked, but is was so much more than that. It was something very spiritual and healing . . .
I will recommend this massage to anyone – whether you are stressed or just want to spoil yourself.
