The Backyard Beer Garden in Jeffreys Bay will be hosting a beer festival filled with a range of entertainment, music, and competitions on Saturday, October 8, to raise funds for The Ladies’ Lighthouse, a non-profit organisation, which assists single mothers in need.

Brian Pyle, who is organising the event, alongside the owner of The Backyard Beer Garden, Rowan Jackson, said that this year they plan to host their first annual JBay Beer Fest, with at least seven local craft beer brewers offering their unique selection of beers to visitors on the day, from 12:00.

“We have decided to raise funds for this organisation because they help single mothers and their children find their feet; something that is very necessary in these very difficult times,” said Pyle.

“They feed at least 55 mothers and 85 children every week and they also provide them with clothing and rent. To put it simply, they do an amazing job.”

On the day, there will be a wide range of entertainment, live performances by local musicians, German food offerings and a dessert stall.

In addition, there will be 10 stalls offering a variety of products and seven fun competitions which include a boat race, arm wrestling, Noot vir Noot, and much more.

Thanks to prizes donated by local businesses, a charity auction will be held, and local modelling agency, Felines Models, will put on a modelling exhibition.

“Entrance is free, and visitors can pre-order one or more of our VIP voucher booklets or purchase the vouchers at the venue which can be used to buy and taste a wide range of craft beers at a substantially reduced price,” said Pyle.

The blue voucher costs R90 for three 500ml craft draft beers; the yellow voucher is R170 for six 500ml craft draft beers and the white voucher costs R300 for six 500ml craft draft beers and six cans of a wide variety of draft beers.

Apart from the activities at the Backyard Beer Garden, Pyle said the 1313 Mac’s Familia motorbike club have joined their fund-raising initiative by collecting non-perishable foods and baby products which will be donated to The Ladies’ Lighthouse.

The motorbike club will also embark on a rally which will start at Caltex Mentors Plaza at 13:00 on Saturday and end at the Backyard Beer Garden.

Carla Smit, founder of The Ladies’ Lighthouse, said she is deeply grateful that people want to invest in the lives of the 57 single mothers, three widows and 112 children who benefit from her NPO.

She said everyone can make a difference in the lives of others by being kind, sharing a smile or sometimes getting out of their comfort zone to give to others in need.

“These families are very, very dear to my heart. They are all single mommies who are in need.

“Some of the mothers work, but do not earn much and it can be very difficult to pay rent, school fees, buy clothing, food, pay medical bills or buy electricity,” said Smit.

Visit The Ladies’ Lighthouse Facebook page for more information about the NPO and items they need to support the less fortunate families.
