SOME 200 students of the Military Academy will descend on Jeffreys on Saturday, November 30 – all for a good cause.
Since 1983, the students have been actively involved in community outreach programmes within underprivileged communities through MASIZA.
Divided into three teams – cycling (60km every day), sailing (between 20 to 50 sea miles per day) and running (10km every day) – they raise funds by planning, organising and participating in a unique event called Exercise Trans Enduro.
The land teams will be asking for donations in support of the MASIZA team, which will be doing community projects – including cleaning and reconditioning of centres housing the less privileged, such as schools, old age homes and sporting facilities.
Spearheaded by Freddie van Rooyen from the community organisation Masikhathalelaneni, Pellsrus Primary School in Jeffreys Bay has been identified as this year’s community project.
According to Van Rooyen, needs identified include the painting of the school and repairs to the roof and ceilings.
“We urge all community members to join us as a family on the day and help paint the building in record time, thus taking ownership of the upliftment of the community,” says Van Rooyen.
“It is only when we stand together, that we can make a positive and lasting difference – no matter where you live.
“It is our vision to restore peace in Jeffreys Bay across all borders.”
Participants must bring their own paint brush and holder for paint.
The day will start with a short opening ceremony at the main beach at 07:00. From there, all present will walk to the school.
According to Van Rooyen, they are in desperate need of wall paint. “Residents and businesses can either make a monetary donation or buy a tin of paint at Build It in Jeffreys Bay – they know exactly what paint the school uses.”
