SEVERAL measures are being rolled out to improve the operation of the Koraal Street sewer pump station at Jeffreys Bay.

That’s the assurance of Kouga Municipality’s Portfolio Councillor for Infrastructure and Engineering, Freddy Campher, following last week’s sewer spill.

Campher said the spill had been caused by a faulty pump drive.

“The drive has been sent for repairs. In the meantime, a spare drive has been procured and installed,” he said.

“This means that once the faulty drive has been fixed and is back in place, there will be a spare drive to help minimise the risk of sewer spills.”

He said the power outage of October 10 had also contributed to the spill.

“There is a generator which runs the pumps during power outages. The start-up control has, however, been giving problems and is being replaced.

“With loadshedding once again being a risk, we have bypassed the start-up control for now, as a short-term solution to ensure that the generator starts up during outages.”

He said additional high level alerts were set to be installed at the pump station and that the control panel was being re-programmed to ensure that the pumps switch over effectively from one to the other.

“These measures should drastically improve the overall operations of the pump station and minimise the risk of spillages,” he assured.

He said the municipality was also investigating the possibility of formalising the existing overflow pond by lining it.
