JBay Central Business District set for a revival

THE Jeffreys Bay Central Business District is set to be revived as part of the Kouga Council’s strategy to breathe new life into the region’s economy.

A tender for the appointment of a service provider to develop a precinct plan for the Jeffreys Bay Central Business District (CBD) was advertised earlier this month. The closing date for submissions is 17 February.

Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said the Jeffreys Bay CBD had been identified as a strategic investment node in the municipality’s Local Economic Development Strategy and Spatial Development Framework.

“This simply means that the CBD is an area with great development and investment potential,” he said.

“The municipality is, therefore, now looking for a top-notch professional team to put together a plan on how to harness this potential.

“The idea is to revive the CBD in partnership with community, public and private roleplayers.

“Potential economic spin-offs will include enhanced property values, as well as an increase in business and employment opportunities.”

He said that, once the appointment was made, it was anticipated that it would take at least six months to finalise the plan.

“The precinct plan should set a vision for the development of the CBD and map out how that vision can be achieved in partnership with community, public and private roleplayers,” he explained.

“The service provider will be expected to hold at least eight consultative meetings in Kouga and to take into consideration all issues affecting the Jeffreys Bay CBD, including its buildings and spaces, land-uses, activities and transport”.

The earmarked area stretches roughly from the Jeffreys Bay main beachfront to the Newton Hall and from De Reyger Street to Duine Road.

In terms of the tender prospective service providers are expected to submit project proposals that clearly state how they plan on approaching the compilation of the precinct plan, their proposed methodology, relevant experience and team members, the timeframe required and associated budget.
