First “Plastic” Road in Africa
- Africa’s first eco-friendly road, incorporating waste plastic, was officially opened in Jeffreys Bay in December 2019
- The road won two Eco-Logic awards in 2020
- Gold for Eco-Innovation and silver for Eco-Build
Sea Vista WWTW upgraded
- Upgraded at a cost of R31 million
- Expected to benefit more than 2 000 households/
- Local labour totalling 44 639 hours
- Ten percent of contract sub-contracted to local Exempted Micro Enterprises
War on Potholes
- Pothole repairs accelerated in 2019/20
- 70 temporary workers employed
- Training for 32 permanent staffers
- 15 378 potholes fixed in 2019/20 compared to 7785 in 2018/19
- 9720 potholes repaired from July to Dec 2020.
Road Resealing
- Almost 12km of road resealed during 2019/20 at a cost of more than R17-million
- R12-million spent on resealing 211 646 square meters during the first three years of governance
Kruisfontein WWTW Upgraded
- Cutting-edge plant built at a cost of R85,6 million
- Local labour totalling 34 000 hours
- Four unemployed residents were trained to operate the plant – now employed permanently
- At least 5 800 households expected to benefit
R15 Million to Hold Back Day Zero
- Local state of disaster declared in 2017 due to the prolonged drought
- Water rationing at Hankey and Patensie since August 2018
- R151,2m secured in drought disaster funding and used to augment the water supply to all Kouga towns
- New boreholes developed and connected at Oyster Bay, Jeffreys Bay and Patensie. Hankey, Humansdorp and St Francis Bay in progress
- Jeffreys Bay Water Treatment Works upgraded at cost of R35-million
- Leaks repaired, meters audited and old pipes replaced

Challenge: Maintenance Backlog
Inherited backlog of more than R500-million:
- R380-million for rehabilitation
- R114-million for periodic maintenance
- R44-million for special maintenance
Gravel Roads Tarred
- Two roads, Nerina and Felix Streets in Humansdorp, were tarred in 2019/20
- R9,2 million spent on gravel road upgrades
Fleet Replacement Plan
- 60 new vehicles and plant purchased over the past four years
- Recent purchases included ten new 4×4 and 4×2 bakkies for the Electrical and Waste Water teams, as well as two new fire trucks
- Almost 130 vehicles and plant have been refurbished by the municipal Fleet section over the past four years, including cherry pickers and sewer tankers
