Through a much-needed donation, Kouga Municipality played a valuable role in equipping local women with life-changing sewing skills – facilitating economic growth and job creation in the region.
The Local Economic Development (LED) and Tourism Department of the municipality donated R50 000 towards non-profit organisation, Sakhe Family Care’s sewing projects, in November last year.
The organisation – whose vision is to build sustainable and quality family life through psychosocial programmes, education support and promotion of economic independence for families to function at their optimal level – used this money to purchase sewing equipment.
This in turn, enabled them to train 11 local women in the art of sewing.
The graduates received their certificate of completing the basic sewing course on Thursday, June 30.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said these skills would enable the women to find income-generating work, or to even become entrepreneurs.
“Keeping Kouga growing in a sustainable way is non-negotiable,” said Hendricks.
“Providing the environment that stimulates economic growth is a core mandate of local government.”
The graduates included, Luleka Sogo, Anna Booi, Siphosethu Sikeyi, Leno Abrahams, Caroline Thulisile, Siphilisiwe Makuleni, Thulisile Khumalo, Matsoari Lebohang, Nonzwakazi Khamanga, Avoya Noluvuyo and Neliswa Mbekwa.
