KOUGA – Breast Cancer Awareness took centre stage this past month as Kouga Local Municipality’s Occupational Health and Safety and Skills Development sections led heartfelt initiatives to honour and celebrate everyone affected by or living with breast cancer.

The month-long campaign began with “Wear-it-Pink Wednesdays,” where staff proudly donned shades of pink to show solidarity and raise awareness.

The highlight of the campaign was the Pink T-shirt Walk held on Friday, 10 October, when staff “painted Jeffreys Bay pink” in a vibrant display of unity, wellness, and preventive health.

Under the inspiring theme “A Lifestyle of Prevention,” participants walked from the Jeffreys Bay Main Building to Pellsrus Caravan Park, turning the streets into a moving wave of pink positivity.

Bringing the energy and spirit to the event was MC Lucy More from Health1st (Centre for Occupational and Wellness Services) – one of the municipality’s trusted partners for medical surveillance.

The event seamlessly combined fun, fitness, and lifesaving information in one colourful celebration.

Participants were treated to a lively post-walk programme featuring energising activities, inspiring testimonies from breast cancer survivors, and motivational messages from the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance and Economic Development, Shena Ruth, and Parks Department Supervisor, Levinia Maulgas.

The Department of Health also shared vital health insights, encouraging staff to embrace proactive wellness habits.

MMC Melanie Nicholls and Ruth lit candles honouring those who have battled breast cancer.

A special handprint tribute with staff leaving colourful handprints on fabric with different colours symbolising survivors, those affected, and those departed, made the event even more special.

Adding further value, Absa and Metropolitan Life offered financial wellness support to staff, while Radhiant’s mobile unit – equipped with advanced 3D mammography technology units capable of detecting abnormalities even in dense breast tissue – was on-site to provide accurate and convenient screenings.

This annual initiative underscores Kouga Local Municipality’s commitment to promoting a culture of health, awareness, and empowerment among its employees and the broader community – a powerful reminder that prevention is always better than cure.
