THE Koukamma Municipality has received a donation of fire-fighting equipment valued at R599 858.
The donation was made by the Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
The equipment includes jaws of life, fire hoses, sledge-hammers, firemen axes, crowbars and breathing apparatus – including a self-contained portable compressor.
The Executive Mayor of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Councillor Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, says, “This shows our continued support to our local municipalities. Fires and any other type of disaster create devastation in our communities and we as municipalities have to do our best to reduce the damage.”
Other municipalities to receive equipment are Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality, Makana Municipality and Sunday’s River Valley Municipality.
To help prevent a fire:
- Avoid starting fires in hot and dry weather conditions, especially if it is windy.
- Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Do not start a fire near vegetation or flammable material.
- Save the SBDM Disaster Management toll-free number (0800 222 238) to be able to immediately report veld fires.
- Always ensure that a cigarette is completely extinguished before it is discarded.
Community members are urged to report fires and other dangerous incidents to their local municipality fire services department or Sarah Baartman District Municipality’s Disaster Management toll-free number at 0800 222 238.
