TAKE a walk on the wild side, or rather a read on the wild side – all in the comfort of your own home.

Jeffreys Bay resident, Mike Nunan, recently released his debut book Firty Free Helephants, Oom!.

The book – a collection of 33 stories – will take readers on an exciting 20-year journey through Nunan’s life in the wild, focusing especially on his experiences as a game lodge manager all over Southern Africa: from small 8-bed lodges in the Waterberg to multi-camp lodges in the Kruger Park. Not to forget KwaZulu-Natal, Chobe in Botswana and Tanzania.

Nunan, a former mathematics teacher, bank manager, athletics administrator and green number comrades runner (he completed 11 comrades); grew up in the frontier bush environment of Northern Botswana, which instilled in him a deep love and respect for nature, wildlife and conservation.

Write-On Publishing owner, Frank Nunan, says, “With Firty Free Helephants, Oom! – derived from the excited exclamation of a young ranger after a game drive – Nunan has combined his skills as a keen observer and as a fireside observer of note, to produce this wonderful collection of reflections, humorous and tragic stories and reminiscences of his life in the bush.

“Both as a child and later as a manager and safari guide.

“He is a deep thinker and many of his stories reflect the philosophising that has taken place at dawn, while sipping on his gallon mug of tea at a lodge or cottage veranda across the southern part of the continent.”
