The Humansdorp-based non-profit organisation, Douglas Matsha People’s Association (Domapa), hosted an exciting school holiday programme at the Humansdorp Library starting on March 31, with the final session scheduled for April 4.
Loyiso Matsha, the president and a retired schoolteacher, stated that at least 18 children in Grades 2 to 9 registered for the programme.
He said that they focused on two subjects, Mathematics and English.
They also incorporated poetry writing, reading, and music into their daily activities.
Matsha, a former South African Boys’ Singles Tennis champion, said that some of the more physical activities included learning to play table tennis and chess.
“Keeping children busy during the school holidays has a dual effect. Children are kept away from mischief whilst learning useful material,” said Matsha.
Children in attendance were from various schools in the region, including Graslaagte Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School, Mzingisi Primary School, JBay Academy, and Nico Malan High School.
Matsha announced that on the final day, April 4, each child would receive a progress report and a small prize.
“Unlike other holiday programmes where children are only taught academic work, Domapa offers a package of academics, cultural activities, and sports,” said Matsha.
He further said that the holiday programme would expand in June to include Grades 8 and 9 accounting.
“The holiday school has an incremental approach. The aim is to include Grade 10 in 2026, and eventually Grades 11 and 12 in subsequent years,” said Matsha.
“The penultimate aim is to have a Saturday school and eventually establish a private school in Kouga.”
