Female Friday – an initiative by the Healthy Mom & Baby Clinic, the Journey Counselling Centre and Oasis FM – will educate, empower and influence young female residents in how they see themselves – all in a practical way. These young residents will furthermore receive bras, sanitary pads and toiletries.
Bernadette Swartz from Oasis FM in Jeffreys Bay, says, “The initiative took flight after a radio programme with Sarah Darby and Thandi Radebe – highlighting the desperate plight of young girls who sleep with men for sanitary towels and food parcels. Basic needs.”
They decided to start a drive where sanitary towels and toiletries can be collected to assist these girls.
In addition, new bras will be collected – the idea of well-known dressmaker Mari du Toit, called The Blossom Project.
“We hope to collect at least 150 goodie bags that will be distributed to grade 7 female learners at Makukhanye and Pellsrus Primary Schools in Jeffreys Bay, on Friday, September 6,” says Swartz.
“This is only the beginning.
“The campaign will then move to other primary schools across Jeffreys Bay, until all schools are reached.”
On the day of the hand-out, which will always be on a Friday, there will be various inspirational talks: Swartz on vision, Nadine Blignaut on identity and etiquette and Sister Lynette van Onselen on female health.
How you can help
Local organisations, businesses and residents can get involved by making a much-needed and life-changing donation: new bras (keep the tag on and include the slip), sanitary towels and toiletries packaged in a gift bag.
Alternatively, residents can “adopt” a girl – sponsoring her monthly sanitary towels and toiletries.
Donations can be dropped off at the Healthy Mom & Baby Clinic in St Francis Street, the JBay Trauma Centre at Neptune Terrace in Da Gama Road and Oasis FM in Woltemade Street.
