LOCAL businessman and avid mountain biker, Andrew Stokker, and his brother-in-law, Russell Drury, are tackling the Transbaviaans MTB challenge on August 28, and are hoping to raise funds for national charity, Cupcakes of Hope, whilst doing so.
The Transbaviaans is a 230km, 24-hour MTB marathon, not called the toughest single-stage race in the world for nothing, taking the riders from Willowmore, through the mountainous Ba- viaanskloof Wilderness Area, and finishing in the coastal town of Jeffreys Bay. This is a team event, with members going through various checkpoints together. They are hoping to complete the race in 12 hours.
This will be a special race for Stokker, as it is his fifth Transbaviaans. He and his team decided to raise funds for Cupcakes of Hope with their race as they know, through personal involvement with the charity, that its fundraising events have been dealt a serious blow due to COVID-19 restrictions on events.
Cupcakes of Hope’s initiatives are aimed at providing direct support to children suffering from cancer, and they are committed to assisting them where they need it most.
Cupcakes of Hope raise funds through community driven initiatives, which drive community interaction and grassroots childhood cancer awareness.
“Cupcake of Hope assist between 100 to 120 patients every month by paying for their medical and other day-to-day needs, some of them local to the Kouga region. This year, more than 2 000 activity packs/gifts have been delivered to 20 paediatric oncology wards across South Africa.
“Cupcakes of Hope have also supplied hospitals with much-needed medical equipment, PPE equipment, educational toys, as well as doing hospital room makeovers,” explained Janelle Stokker, Andrew’s wife and he local coordinator for Cupcakes of Hope.
In order for Andrew and Russell to raise funds they have created a Back-a-buddy page where people can safely donate towards their event. To access the team’s back-a-buddy page, search ‘transbaviaans for cupcakes of hope’ at www.backabuddy.co.za.
