A new pound had been established at a farm in Melon to assist with the management of stray animals in the Kouga region.
“It is important to note that Kouga Municipality does not have a municipal pound and cannot impound stray animals,” said community services portfolio councillor, Daniel Benson.
The privately-owned pound, located at Farm De Hoek in Melon, offers separate enclosures for different animals including cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. All camps have permanent water points and are securely fenced off.
“It is hoped that the pound will go a long way towards reducing road accidents that are a result of stray animals,” said Benson.
“The pound will also greatly contribute to the fight against stock theft, as stray animals will now have a secure place to be taken to.”
He said that the pound makes use of a service provider to pick up stray animals.
Benson encouraged all livestock owners to ensure that their animals do not wander around unattended and that they are properly branded.
“Ultimately, it is the responsibility of livestock owners to keep their animals from damaging other people’s property and roaming around in the road, where they can cause serious accidents.”
Stray animals can be reported to 063 234 4669.
