Thanks to the support of locals, the Kouga branch unit Visarend, of the South African Defence Force Association (SADFA), were able to raise the necessary funds they needed for the retired military veterans in the Kouga region when they hosted a successful golf day at Jeffreys Bay Golf Club on August 5.

As previously reported, the SADFA’s Kouga branch, which is based in Jeffreys Bay, has 126 military members – all retired.

To ensure that their retired members are assisted with the various challenges they might face, the association needed funding.

To raise the necessary funds, the association hosted a golf day, which according to Deon Wessels, the treasurer of Kouga’s SADFA, was a great success.

Wessels said,

A few players dropped out at the last minute for whatever reason, but overall it was a huge success and a great day was had. We met loads of new people.

He said that the support they received indicated that people want to help retired military members.

“The support we received at the golf day shows us that people are aware of the challenges that ex-members face, and are willing to participate in assisting where necessary,” said Wessels.

Durma Loubser, chairperson of Kouga’s SADFA, confirmed that the golf day was very successful with 56 players participating in the exciting event.

She said that the funds raised will be used for their “Project Sandpatrys” which refers to the assistance they offer to the retired military members.

Loubser said that Wessels, who initiated the event, excelled in his planning and sponsorship efforts.

Loubser said,

The unit gives thanks to Deon and his assistants, Hilary Bannister and Louise Panton, for their efforts, as well as Martin Loubser for giving a helping hand.

Delivering a hot boerewors roll to each player was a member of the association, Collin Geldenhuys, and his assistants, Elna Malan and Thomas Roux from Property Time, who kept the fire going throughout the golf day.

In addition to the boerewors roll, each player was given a cold drink after playing nine holes.

Loubser said that the prizegiving concluded the golf event, which was made possible by the generosity of the players and the many donations they received.

The winners of the golf event in the women’s division included Celeste van Rie (winner), Ronelle du Toit (second place) and Irene Bradley (third place).

In the men’s division the winners were Andrew Hall (winner), Deon van Zyl (second place) and JP Senekal (third place).

In addition to prizes given to the winners, all players received prizes for their participation.

“We trust that with all aboard we can host the same event again next year,” said Loubser.
