JEFFREYS BAY – Kouga Local Municipality’s Fire and Disaster Management team responded swiftly and effectively to a structural fire that broke out among informal dwellings in Tuna Street, Pellsrus, on 28 October.

According to a statement by the municipality, the call was received at 09:01, and the Jeffreys Bay Fire Station crew was immediately dispatched, arriving on the scene within just five minutes.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with multiple informal structures engulfed in flames on both Tuna and Galjoen Streets.

The fire spread rapidly due to the close proximity of the dwellings and the use of combustible building materials.

Reinforcements were quickly requested from Humansdorp Fire Station, and the combined efforts of both fire crews successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby RDP houses.

Despite the intensity of the fire, it was brought under control by 10:09 and fully extinguished by 10:26 – less than 90 minutes after the first call was received.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though several informal structures were destroyed.

A total of four firefighting vehicles, seven dedicated firefighters, and the Deputy Fire Chief were on the scene, with valuable support from Kouga’s Civil Engineering and Water Services teams.

Kouga Local Municipality has indicated that they will help affected residents, including the supply of blankets and mattresses.

Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, extended his gratitude to the firefighting team for their professionalism and swift response.

“Our firefighters once again demonstrated courage, dedication, and teamwork under pressure,” said Bornman.

“Their quick and coordinated response not only contained the fire but prevented further devastation. We thank them sincerely for their outstanding service to our community.”

Bornman also expressed heartfelt appreciation to members of the community who assisted during the emergency.

Many residents rushed to help extinguish the fire and safely remove furniture and personal belongings from affected homes before the flames could spread.

“It is truly inspiring to witness a community stand together in times of crisis,” Bornman added.

“Your willingness to help your neighbours in need reflects the strong spirit of unity in Pellsrus and Kouga as a whole. We are deeply grateful for your bravery and compassion.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
