KOUGA is committed to incorporating sound environmental practices into the day-to-day operations of the municipality.
This was the assurance given by Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks in his State of the Municipality Address.
He said recent achievements included the drafting of a management plan for the Seekoei estuary at Paradise Beach, currently open for public comment.
“The municipality has also started clearing and stabilising the dunes that have been threatening to overrun Brander Street and neighbouring properties at Oyster Bay.
“A Special Ratings Area (SRA) has further been established at St Francis Bay, in part to address the ongoing erosion of the town’s beaches and the dune spit that separates the St Francis canals from the ocean.”
Hendricks said waste and environmental management went hand in hand.
“Waste management is one of the three priority areas we have identified for our climate change partnership with the German municipality, Ilsfeld, alongside renewable energy and water security,” he said.
“Proposals for the projects on which Kouga and Ilsfeld would like to collaborate, are being finalised, with the final funding applications due in October.
“Our partnership with Ilsfeld also has the potential for various spin-offs, most notably in the fields of tourism, early childhood development and tertiary education.”
