Add a giraffe, elephant, lion and monkey – all listening to their favourite story being read out loud in the middle of the jungle.

In a bid to cultivate a love of reading among learners in the foundation phase, Standard Bank’s CSI Department, in conjunction with RAK Events, recently established a new library corner at Krakeel Primary School. The library boasts over 1 000 books donated by Standard Bank, as well as colourful and comfortable spaces for learners to read and write.

The aim of the project is to improve the level of literacy among Grade R and Grade 3 learners. The classroom identified for the library was cleaned, painted and repaired where necessary by RAK Events, while the employee volunteers from Standard Bank provided the final touches.

This includes reading corner cushions, ottomans and tyre chairs for the young bookworms to sit on. They furthermore painted the unique tetras shelving and the vibrant library related wall art. Blinds and new shelving were installed. Standard Bank employees are urged to ‘adopt’ a school library where they can implement various literacy activities: a reading circle and comprehension days.

  • Standard Bank and RAK Events has been implementing school libraries at primary schools across South Africa for the last three years.
