New trail run takes to the ‘sand’

ST Francis Sport is set to host the first-ever Sand River Trail Run on Saturday, September 26 – making up for all the lost events of 2020.

The race, the first since the national COVID-19 lockdown in March this year, will consist of three distances and is suitable for both runners and walkers. The various distances are 21km, 12km and 5km.

The route will start at the Dune Ridge Country House, and proceed towards the Sand River through the Eskom Conservation Reserve.

The 21km race includes 11km of dirt road, and 10km of dunefield, while the 12km race includes 8km of dirt road and 4km of dunefield. The 5km trail run consists of dirt road only.

There will be three water stations for the 21km race (although the 10km dunefield will be unassisted): two for the 12km race and one for the 5km race.

Walkers and runners must bring their own folding cups to ensure good hygiene.

Event organiser, Eric Stewart, says, “In order to adhere to COVID-19 regulations, races will be limited to 45 participants and five marshals. Masks before and after the race are compulsory, while hand sanitation stations will be available. Social distancing must be kept during the race as far as possible.

“There will be no official prize giving.”

The Kouga Municipality expressed their thanks towards the organisers for taking the lead.

“The municipality is happy to approve this event – so, it’s all systems go,” says Stewart.

The trail run will start and finish at the Dune Ridge Country House just outside St Francis Bay.
