Kouga Local Municipality marked a proud moment this month as Marie van der Mescht received the keys to her newly renovated home, located on Erf 17, Douglas Street in Hankey.
The revamp forms part of the municipality’s ongoing maintenance and housing improvement strategy, which aims to restore municipal-owned properties to safe, habitable, and dignified living spaces for residents with existing lease agreements.
Previously uninhabitable and in a state of disrepair, the house had fallen victim to vandalism, theft, and illegal occupation. The structure lacked basic services such as running water, electricity, and functioning plumbing, rendering it completely unsuitable for occupancy.
“We are committed to restoring dignity to our communities by breathing new life into neglected municipal properties,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman.
“This project is a shining example of how we can revitalise our housing stock, support local businesses, and give residents a renewed sense of pride and belonging.”
Under the guidance of the assigned project manager, the home underwent a full transformation.
A site briefing was held to invite local SMMEs to competitively quote on specific areas of the refurbishment.
This approach ensured that each component of the project was allocated to different service providers, creating opportunities for economic growth and skills development within the Gamtoos Valley region.
The extensive scope of work included the installation of a new electrical system and lighting, both inside and outside the property.
The kitchen was completely revamped with new cupboards and flooring, while both bathrooms were modernised to ensure comfort and functionality.
Ceiling boards were replaced throughout the home, the plumbing system was repaired, and a geyser was installed.
The entire house was painted and tiled, and all doors were either repaired or replaced, including the addition of secure galvanized gates for added safety.
Thanks to the dedication of all involved, the renovations were completed within a month, allowing Van der Mescht to move into her newly refurbished home in June 2025.
“Seeing the joy on Van der Mescht’s face as she stepped into her new home was a powerful reminder of why we do this work,” said Bornman. “Every project like this brings us one step closer to a more caring and dignified Kouga.”
