NICO Malan High School’s new play, Ons Tyd is Nou, will take to the stage at the school on Monday, July 22.
Written and directed by Marjorie Arnold and musically directed by Jannie Venter for the ATKV-tienertoneel, the play is an energe-tic mix of big laughs, catchy one-liners, musical numbers and serious moments that highlight social and peer pressure in high school.
The choreograph, done by Carrie Nissiotis, makes the play a successful mix between musical and cabaret – especially present in the phy-sical theatre of Jane Venter and Kayla Oliver.
Teenage girls rule the detention class and stage in this bittersweet comedy.
Ons Tyd is Nou is a slice of life in a South African high school of fifteen teenage girls. The actresses glow in their performances: Mikhayla Hendricks as the bossy cheerleader, Chelsea Biko breathes life into the cha-racter of the feisty Hockey captain with Imke Rischmuller responsible for many of the belly laughs as the chipper art weirdo with a big heart.
The fearsome ballerina is portrayed by Elandri Venter, who is the lead vocalist on a showstopper of a rendition of Roxanne with Zipho Tshunungwa.
Notably Helena Gildenhuys reminds you of your favourite sarcastic friend from school; Emma Gutsche plays the part of the confident friend flanked by Anami Ngqandu, the girly-girl with the undeserved reputation, and the lovable nerds with cutting one-liners played by Marina Butoi, Megan de Klerk, Sino Cunge and VickyAugustus.
The performances throughout are strong and as tensions rise in the detention class, so does the actresses’ performance.
Ons Tyd is Nou will take to the stage at Nico Malan High School in Humansdorp at 19:00 on July 22.
