PHAROS School in Jeffreys Bay now offers hybrid home schooling – a first for schools in the Kouga region.

Popular among home schoolers in the United States, the new hybrid educational model will offer three options to prospective learners: enrolment for academic subjects only and enrolment for academic and non-academic subjects like chess, skills and art; as well as the option to add sport, cultural and outdoor activities.

According to Pharos Principal, Fanie Vermaak, they already have their first hybrid school student – Noah Loppnow.

“The school will supervise the curriculum and provide the weekly and daily roster, test schedule and all the assessments and memorandums,” says Vermaak.

“Examination papers will be marked by Pharos School teachers and the school will issue a report at the end of each term.”

Vermaak says that one of the advantages of being a hybrid home schooler at Pharos, is that learners will use the school’s in-house developed text books which are visually stimulating, child friendly and help make teaching fun.

“Not only are they written from a Biblical world view, but they strive to develop critical thinking and problem solving. For now they available for Grade 4 to 7 learners who want to make use of this opportunity.”

According to Vermaak, hybrid home schooling not only gives the mother or teacher of the home schooler the support and assurance they might need, but it also provides the opportunity of interaction with other learners outside of the structured environment.
