EXTRA safety measures have been put in place to prevent drownings at two of Jeffreys Bay’s most dangerous beaches.
Kouga Mayor Horatio Hendricks said five red torpedo buoys have been placed at sea at Albatros Beach and Magna’s, near Checkers.
“Three have been placed at Albatros and two at Magna’s,” he said. “Both these beaches are known for their strong rip currents and are not safe for swimming nor are there lifeguards on duty.
“The idea is for these buoys to serve as a floatation aid should anyone get caught in a rip current.”
NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rensburg cautioned that the buoys should not be seen as a safety net or a target to swim to.
“We urge the public to swim only at those beaches patrolled by lifeguards and only between the flags,” he said.
