WITH the combined levels of Kouga’s supply dams having dropped to below 40%, a renewed call has gone out to residents and business to use water sparingly.
“There has been very little rain in the catchment areas these past few months,” said Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks. “The rainfall for August was, in fact, the lowest on record for more than 100 years.”
According to the South African Weather Services, only 3mm of rain was recorded in the Kouga and Nelson Mandela Bay area this past August – 4,7mm was recorded in 1985.
Dam levels this week stood at 17,18% for the Impofu Dam, 36,29% for the Kouga Dam, 53,11% for the Loerie Dam and 89, 45% for the Churchill Dam.
“The towns of Hankey and Patensie, which rely on the Kouga Dam, remain the hardest hit and only have water for a few hours each day,” said Hendricks. “While we expect our water augmentation projects to significantly boost the supply to all towns once they have been completed, we cannot relax efforts to save water.” – REPORTER
