MULTIPLE urns at the wall of remembrance at C-Place Cemetery, in Jeffreys Bay, were allegedly vandalised by drug addicts recently which has left residents frustrated.
After noticing pictures of the vandalised wall of remembrance, which was posted on the Jeffreys Bay (New Community Page) Facebook page recently, Tina Malan, from Wavecrest, said she felt sad that some people had so much disregard for someone else’s sorrow.
However, she said, the vandalism was not surprising, considering the times we were living in.
“I really hope that people would show some respect for their fellow man’s deceased loved ones. Raising children to become decent adults with values would be a good start to all our problems in this country.”
According to Kouga community services portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, the cemetery, located next to Jeffreys Bay Comprehensive High School, had recently fallen victim to vandals, despite the municipality ramping up security, with a fence erected to limit access to the cemetery after hours.
“It is believed that the urns, containing human ashes, are plundered by drug addicts to be used as a mixture to add volume to the street drug they use,” said Benson.
“It is with sadness and shock to learn that there are certain members of the community maliciously damaging the wall of remembrance, a respected place where loved ones have been buried.”
