The Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality has issued a notice warning residents about a scam involving threats of electricity disconnection.
According to Municipal Manager Dr Edward Rankwana, the municipality has been informed that individuals are visiting or calling residents, claiming their electricity will be disconnected due to overdue municipal accounts. These individuals then demand cash payments to prevent the disconnection.
“We urge all community members to remain vigilant and to make payments only to the official municipal account,” said Rankwana.
“Municipal electricians will never request cash payments or provide personal bank account details. If there is any uncertainty, residents should contact the municipality directly for confirmation.”
All municipal payments must be made at designated municipal cash points or deposited into the official municipal bank account.
