Sand artist, Siyabonga Duma, who recently relocated from Gqeberha to Jeffreys Bay, hopes to use his new location as an opportunity to share his beautiful sculptures with locals and tourists in the area.

Duma, who moved from Durban to Gqeberha in 2016, has been searching for a new location and scenery to showcase his sand art.

Earlier this month, he visited Jeffreys Bay for the first time and immediately knew he wanted to relocate to the area and showcase his sand art with the community.

Duma, who makes a living from creating sand art, settled in at his new home in Ocean View and three weeks ago he began designing his beautiful sand sculptures at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach.

“I knew it was a good decision to have chosen Jeffreys Bay for my sand art business because it is a great location,” said Duma.

He said since he moved to the area, many locals and tourists have visited his new location and have given him positive feedback.

“Even though I have only been in Jeffreys Bay for a few weeks, so many people have approached me to tell me that they like my sculptures. They have also enjoyed standing next to the sculptures to take pictures,” said Duma.

Some of the artwork he has designed using sand and water include, the big five game animals, a dolphin, shark, and a mermaid.

In addition, he has also designed ‘boards’ with encouraging texts about God’s love.

He said due to the weather and vandalism to his work at night, each morning he has had to redesign each sculpture.

To ensure that people can clearly see the sand art from a distance, he creates a wide range of sculptures.

“I try to make the sand art as big as possible and I create many sculptures from different angles so that people can take pictures of my work,” said Duma.

He said that he had enjoyed spending time at the beach from a young age and now creating sand art has given him the opportunity to spend every day at the beach doing what he loves. “I love the beach and I want to be at the beach every day,” said Duma.

He said his love for the beach had inspired him to place texts on his sand art asking people to keep the beach clean at his previous location at Hobie Beach in Gqeberha.

Duma said he prefers being at the beach instead of his home in Ocean View.
