To raise much-needed funds for the Sunshine Old Age Service Centre, resident senior citizens will host a Golden Oldies Modelling Show where they will walk the stage to showcase their talents and fashionable clothing on May 25, at Pellsrus Community Hall.
Stoffel Williams, chairman of the board, said the Jeffreys Bay-based centre was established as a non-profit organisation in 2015 and has 20 active members.
The centre is managed by the project manager, Francis Faulkner, who works alongside a group of volunteers.
Located in Mandela Bay, the centre is open three days a week from Tuesday to Thursday, and on these days their members are given two meals.
In addition, the centre offers various programmes which include exercise classes, art classes, craft work, needlework, social awareness, and health care.
In 2023 the centre’s members participated in the Eastern Province Golden Games, an annual event hosted by the Department of Social Development to encourage the elderly to live a healthy lifestyle.
Thankfully, with hard work and determination, two members of the Sunshine Old Age Centre, Williams (67) and Pastor Jan Fortuin (66), were selected to represent the Eastern Cape at the South African National Golden Games.
Unfortunately, the games meant to take place in Mpumalanga were cancelled by the Department of Social Development.
“Having two of our members chosen to represent the Eastern Cape is a great accomplishment for the centre,” said Williams.
To ensure that the centre continues to serve the elderly in Jeffreys Bay, he said they will host a Golden Oldies Modelling Show on May 25, where members from the centre will walk the stage.
“The event, which is supported by the local pastors fraternal, will allow us to raise much-needed funds to create an environment that enhances their health, social interactions, and enjoyment of life,” said Williams.
The Master of Ceremonies at the event will be Pastor Abraham Bakker from Kariega, well-known for his entertaining jokes.
Tickets cost R30 per person and the event will start at 14:00.
“People can look forward to the elderly walking the stage and showing off their talents and clothing,” said Williams.
“We would like to encourage our community to come and support this worthy cause for our elderly people.”
In addition to funds, Williams said the centre also needs an urn, heater, fold-up tables, portable fan, stationery, and material for needlework.
He said the centre also needs seeds for their vegetable garden, which they hope to expand.
“We have a vegetable garden at the centre, but it is not being utilised at full capacity, and we therefore hope to receive seeds for the garden,” said Williams.
