THE first Humansdorp Street Sport Festival will take place at the Kruisfontein Centre in Humansdorp next week.

Set to take place on December 27 and 28, the programme will include five-a-side soccer, touch rugby, mini cricket and netball.

Initiated by Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks, the purpose of the festival is to take a stand against social challenges facing young people today, including, drug and substance abuse, violent crimes and gangsterism.

“One of the factors that contributes to these challenges is the lack of extramural activities available to young people. That is why we have embarked on this initiative,” he said.

“Ultimately, we would like to see the concept taking off across the Kouga region to such an extent that we will be able to create a ‘street league’ for young people who are not active in formal sport but would like to socialise with their peers in a healthy environment.

“It will also be an opportunity for young people to explore their talents and interests in a fun way.”

The Humansdorp Street Sport Festival will take place from 09:00 to 17:00 on December 27 and 28.
