The first round of The IIE’s Varsity College’s annual National High Schools Quiz, which took place recently, saw some strong competition, with last year’s winner ending in the top five, with learners from three other schools.

The quiz offers a cash prize of R10 000 to the winner with a host of other prizes to the value of R100 000. There was an influx of entries this year with 11 different schools and 20

learners from in and around the Nelson Mandela Bay taking part in this hotly contested quiz.

The competition really was tight as the 2021 winner, Juane Oosthuizen (Grade 11, Nico Malan High School, Humansdorp) had to settle for fourth place.

The top five, who will go into regional final at the end of the month, will consist of winner Mtha Gonose (Grade 9, Harvest Christian School), second-placed Kieran White (Grade 11, Alexander Road High School), third-placed Brady Rispel (Grade 11, Nico Malan High School), Oosthuizen in fourth place and Zunaira Ansari (Grade 10 at Theodor Herzl High School) who ended in fifth place.

The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus head, Paul Manson, emphasised how tough the competition was.

“I was pleased to welcome last year’s winner, Juane Oosthuizen, back and looking at the number of entries we’ve received, this year’s regional final will be very exciting. We are hoping that the title will remain in the Eastern Cape,” said Manson.

The finals, to be hosted in Durban, will include the top regional winner from each campus.
