HUMANSDORP – At approximately 06:00 on Wednesday, 4 February, Kouga Local Municipality responded to a power failure affecting the Maak n Las area.

Investigations revealed that the outage was caused by suspected copper cable theft, with a piece of wire found burned off following a short circuit that caused extensive damage to the electrical infrastructure.

According to a municipal press release, copper cable theft is not a minor offence.

“It endangers lives, disrupts essential services, damages household appliances, and leaves entire communities without electricity,” the statement said.

These criminal acts are being committed within the same communities that suffer the consequences.

“We urgently call on residents to report any information that can assist in identifying those responsible to Kouga Local Municipality,” the statement said.

Information can be shared anonymously through the Kouga Call Centre at 042 200 2200.
