Khabonina Qubeka, a name synonymous with artistry and inspiration, has left an indelible mark on the world of performing arts, business, and community development.
Born in Orlando West, Soweto, and raised in the vibrant city of Johannesburg, Qubeka’s multifaceted career spans across dance, acting, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.
Her philanthropic initiatives reflect her belief in uplifting communities — a philosophy she brings to her involvement with “Teater by die See” in Jeffreys Bay.
“I immediately fell in love with the concept of ‘Teater by die See’ because Jeffreys Bay and Kouga Local Municipality are showing the rest of the country that we do not wait for opportunities to come to us, but we create opportunities and platforms to showcase local talent. It is all about celebrating culture, art and entertainment to the core.
“I believe community is the very core. Community is vital for fostering a sense of belonging, providing support, and promoting collective action, ultimately enhancing individual and societal well-being and fostering a shared identity and purpose. The municipality does exactly that. Hence, we will always support the local municipality in any way we can,” she said.
She added that she was honoured to be a judge at the talent competition.
“I love passionate, talented people, especially kids. Being talented is a huge privilege that needs to be shared, but first you must hone your talent, respect it, and guard it jealously for it is your gift from God. Handle it with care and watch what it can do for you and your future.”
From a young age, Qubeka’s creative spirit was evident. Excelling in high school, she earned her colours for dance and drama, clinched public speaking awards, and even claimed the title of Miss Kensington during her primary school years.
A natural leader and achiever, she shone academically and dominated athletics. Her passion for the arts blossomed into a stellar career.
As an award-winning actress, she secured the Indie Spirit Best Actress award at the Boston Film Festival for her role in “Dora’s Peace” and received a nomination at the AMAA, among other accolades from renowned film festivals in Beijing and Florida.
Most recently, Khabonina was honoured with the 2024 SA Hero Award: Ubuntu and Art of Giving Award, cementing her status as a cultural icon.
Her entrepreneurial prowess is equally remarkable. As the founder of Khanatural.com, she has transformed the wellness industry with sea moss-based products, ranging from gels and capsules to lotions and oils.
Her venture extends to publishing with the successful Khanatural Mag, a monthly magazine celebrating wellness and creativity.
Having worked in television, on screen as an actress and host, and behind the scenes as a producer, being a judge on reality dance shows like Step Up or Step Out and Dance your Butt Off, she has plans to make a difference in the lives of children.
“I want to build an arts centre where kids can partake and create art programmes for dance, drama, film, musicals, etc,” Qubeka said.
“Furthermore, I want to build a centre for abused / disadvantaged women with serious empowerment programmes so that the women leave the centre empowered, more focused and filled with purpose. This is how we help build and improve community.”
The “Teater by die See” Festival takes place from March 21 to March 23, 2025.
