On June 6, the Nifty Fifties, a Jeffreys Bay social club for the over 50s, were treated to a visit by members of Therapy TOP Dogs.

The Nifty Fifties Club meets on the first Friday of every month, in the Methodist Church, Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay.

Cheryl Durham introduced the TOP Dog handlers and their amazing therapy canines.

Jill Thompson, coordinator in the Eastern Cape, said that Therapy TOP Dogs began in 2008 with a small group of eight volunteers in Gauteng who shared a belief in the healing power of dogs.

She said that what started as a modest initiative has grown into South Africa’s largest therapy dog organisation, with over 150 dedicated volunteers spread across seven regions in four provinces.

“The organisation’s work is multifaceted, focusing on animal-assisted therapy, activities, and educational programmes,” said Thompson.

She said that one of their standout initiatives is a court preparation programme run in partnership with the Teddy Bear Clinic, offering invaluable support to vulnerable children.

“Therapy TOP Dogs bring comfort and joy to hospitals, rehabilitation centres, oncology wards, frail care homes, schools for differently-abled individuals and children’s homes of safety,” said Thompson.

In Jeffreys Bay, they visit Amala Nursing Home, Eedenglen, and Jeffreysrus Retirement Villages.

Thompson said that whether it’s the cheerful wag of a tail in a hospital or the soothing presence of a dog in a frail care home, these therapy dogs create moments of connection, joy, and hope.

She said that their unique ability to adapt to each situation ensures that they bring smiles to the faces of people of all ages and circumstances, leaving behind cherished memories and renewed spirits.

“The simple act of petting produces an automatic relaxation response, which could even reduce the amount of medication needed. Dogs are also sensitive to a human’s mental and physical state, and can help a person overcome deep grief,” said Thompson.

She further said that at the core of the success of TOP Dogs are the handlers, who give not just their time but also their hearts.

“Their commitment, paired with the extraordinary dogs they share, has made Therapy TOP Dogs a source of comfort and inspiration, spreading smiles for miles throughout South Africa,” said Thompson.

She said that the JBay Therapy TOP Dogs are inviting dog owners who would enjoy such volunteer work and have pets that are gentle and joyful to join the team.
