KEMPTON PARK – A notorious kidnapping mastermind known as “Dollarman” was shot and killed during a confrontation with police officers on Wednesday evening, leading to the successful rescue of an Indian businessman who had been held captive in Alexandra.
The dramatic events unfolded near the R21 in Kempton Park when members of SAPS anti-kidnapping task team engaged the suspect in a shootout. Hours later, just after midnight on Thursday, 4 September, police located the kidnapped businessman in a shack in Alexandra and safely reunited him with his family.
The businessman was kidnapped on 23 July from his business premises in Benoni.
The dead suspect, a Mozambican national, was a wanted kidnapping kingpin in both South Africa and Mozambique. He appeared on SERNIC, Mozambique’s wanted persons database, where he was sought in connection with several kidnapping-for-ransom cases.
“This successful operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to combating kidnapping and ensuring the safety of our communities,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. “The suspect was a dangerous criminal who had been evading law enforcement for some time.”

In South Africa, “Dollarman” was linked to at least five kidnapping-for-ransom cases, as well as numerous other serious crimes including housebreaking, carjacking, and possession of unlicensed firearms.
“Since July 2021, our dedicated anti-kidnapping task team has arrested more than 337 kidnappers and seized over 146 illegal firearms from various crime scenes,” Mathe explained. “This operation is another testament to our officers’ bravery and professionalism.”
The rescue comes amid intensified police operations across the country. In the past week alone, more than 14 773 suspects have been arrested for various crimes ranging from murder to rape during OPERATION SHANELA, with police seizing at least 163 illegal firearms.
“We will continue to pursue those who prey on innocent citizens and terrorise our communities,” Mathe stated. “This case sends a clear message that law enforcement will not rest until criminals are brought to justice.”
The businessman’s identity has not been disclosed for security reasons. Police investigations into the kidnapping syndicate continue.
