The North-West University (NWU) issued a statement today, saying they are aware of an incident that allegedly involved chanting and the infringement of other students’ rights at one of the student residences on the Potchefstroom Campus. The statement didn’t say whether those involved were students of the university.

Videos have been doing the rounds on social media of three men chanting “p**s the boer and p**s the farmer” in front of the Over de Voor mens’ residence, but students in neighbouring residences also witnessed and took videos of the incident last night, 5 June, just before midnight.

NWU said in a statement that it “views the infringement or violation of human rights, policies, and rules in a serious light, and strongly condemns any actions or behaviour that seek to undermine its values.

“Therefore, the university has commenced with the necessary investigation into the alleged incident.

“We assure our stakeholders that anyone found guilty will be dealt with firmly in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.”

A female resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, also said that she knows of a separate incident in which a female resident were harassed by a man in front of her ladies’ residence this morning. He allegedly tried to stop her from entering and questioned her about what political party she belonged to. “The female students, especially, are very traumatised about this and scared to leave their residences,” the student said.

A spokesperson for NWU confirmed that there was an alleged incident at a ladies’ residence, but said no one was stopped from entering the residence. The university is, however, investigating this incident as well.
