ALMOST 3 000 wheelie bins are set to be rolled out to St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis and Oyster Bay.
Kouga Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Daniel Benson, said the distribution of wheelie bins to these towns was scheduled to begin at the end of July.
“The roll-out will bring the distribution of wheelie bins to formalised areas to a close,” he said.
“Since May last year, almost 19 000 bins have been distributed at Patensie, Hankey, Loerie, Thornhill, Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay.”
He asked property owners who were not home at the time of distribution in their area to contact the municipality’s waste section to arrange for the collection or dropping off of their bins.
“The municipality will be phasing out the collection of black bags in residential areas. It is, therefore, important that all properties have a wheelie bin.”
He said four refuse compactor trucks had been fitted with bin lifters to enable refuse collection teams to empty the wheelie bins quickly and efficiently.
He further urged residents to mark their wheelie bins clearly with their address.
“All the bins have serial numbers that show which property they belong to. Marking the bins is, however, a good additional measure to help deter theft.”
He said residents were also encouraged to return the wheelie bins to their yards as soon as was possible once they had been emptied.
“The wheelie bins are expected to boost our efforts to keep Kouga clean significantly,” he said.
“Not only will it help us cut down on plastic waste, it is also a far more hygienic and safer way of storing and collecting refuse.
“One of the big challenges our refuse crews face on a daily basis is the tearing open of black bags by rats, stray dogs and goats. The wheelie bins will help to minimise this and enable a cleaner and healthier environment for our residents.”
Those who have not received their bins in areas where distribution has already taken place can visit the waste section at the Pellsrus Community Hall between 9am and 2pm, Mondays to Fridays, or from 08:00 to 11:00 on Saturdays. Alternatively, email cventer@kouga.gov.za or whatsapp 067 054 0402.
