ANGLERS can reel in thousands of Rand at this year’s JBay Winterfest Skins 2019 competition taking place from the Gap at Kabeljauws to Kitchen Window Restaurant from 07:00 to 13:00 on Saturday, July 6.
The unique shore angling competition supports catch-and-release and offers a healthy fish population: kabeljou, steenbras, musselcracker, baardman, leervis, zebra, blacktail, spearnose skate, blackray, cow shark, spotted gully and smoothound.
Twelve marshals spread evenly along the fishing area, will record the catches, fill in the weigh cards and return catches to the water as quickly as possible.
Edible fish count 10 points/kg, while non-edible fish count 1 point/kg.
Two flags will demarcate the fishing boundaries. No fishing will be allowed outside of these flags; all weigh cards must be handed in at the prize-giving tent before 14:30.
Prizes
Several overall prizes will be up for grabs: heaviest species, top senior, top woman, and top junior.
In addition, the competition is also divided into six mini-competitions or ‘skins’ – each lasting one hour.
The person who catches the highest-scoring fish for that hour will win the cash ‘skin’ valued at R3 000 and any other prizes – including a Penn fishing reel, rods, lures braid and branded clothing – allocated to that skin.
If it happens that no fish are recorded for any skin, the prize will carry over to the next skin.
House rules
Men are allowed to cast for their children (u.16), wives and girlfriends – ensuring a fun day’s fishing for the whole family.
The rules are such that any size fish of any species can win a skin.
